Hair Loss / Growth

Several medications can help manage hair loss, with the most suitable choice depending on the type and cause of your hair loss. Here’s an overview of some common hair loss medications: 1. Minoxidil (Rogaine) **Mechanism: Minoxidil is a topical solution or foam, Tablet, that stimulates hair growth by prolonging the growth phase of hair follicles and increasing blood flow to the scalp. While its exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, it’s thought to open blood vessels and allow more blood to reach the hair follicles. **Effectiveness: Works for approximately 2 out of 3 men and is most effective for early-stage hair loss. **Results typically take 4-6 months or more to become noticeable and require continued use to maintain benefits. Side Effects: Can include scalp irritation, redness, dryness, flaking, or unwanted hair growth on adjacent skin. Also, hair growth on the face or body is a potential common side effect. Oral Minoxidil: A prescription version exists and may be an option if you can’t tolerate the topical form or prefer a pill.

However, oral minoxidil is used off-label for hair loss 2. Finasteride (Propecia) Mechanism: This prescription oral medication primarily treats male pattern baldness by lowering the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss in men. **Effectiveness: Very effective, slowing or stopping hair loss in nearly 90% of men, and some also experience hair regrowth. Results may take 4-6 months to appear.** *Finasteride should not be handled by women who are or may become pregnant, as it can cause birth defects in male babies* Topical Finasteride: Compounded topical finasteride is available
